Camden students bring concerns about budget cuts to New Jersey Department of Education

Camden, New Jersey students recently protested at the state Department of Education in Trenton, opposing significant budget cuts to their school district. The district faces a $91 million deficit, leading to over 100 staff layoffs, including teachers and support personnel. Students expressed concerns about the impact on their education, noting the loss of trusted staff and essential resources like media centers. Community members and organizations supported the protest, criticizing the state's decision to exclude public testimony at the related Board of Education meeting. The budget shortfall is attributed to declining enrollment and increased payments to charter and renaissance schools. Despite receiving substantial state aid, the district's financial challenges persist. Superintendent Katrina McCombs, who announced the cuts, plans to step down on July 1, transitioning to a state role.
